The Year 5770 – A Year of Prophecy and Redemption

The Admonition and Redemption

We begin this shiur by talking about the Tochacha, (the set of curses), that appear twice in the Torah: once in the book of Vayikra in Parshas Bechukosai and once in Devarim in Parshas Ki Savo.  At the end, when it talks about the Geula in the Torah, about when Hashem redeems the Jews, it says, “And I remember my covenant with Yakov.”  Interesting to note is that in this case, the name Yakov is written with an extra ‘Vav’.

Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai comes to explain to us this Pasuk, who says that this pasuk was said on the Galus of the Jews,this final exile, which we are standing just past right now.  We now quote from The Zohar, chelek Alef, page 119, side 1: “Because when the Jews are going to be in Galus, when the time comes for them to be redeemed, they will be redeemed with the power of the Vav.”  The Vav is the Vav of Shem Havayeh, which means a lot of different things.  It means on one level love and fear, or Ahava and Yirah.  These correspond to Chessed and Gevurah, which are the main structures of the six sefirot of Zeir Anpin.  They are also connected to the Shofar.  It says that “At that time, I will blow the Great Shofar”.

Dates, Dates and More Dates

Continuing in The Zohar, it is now going to give some dates.

In the First Millennium corresponded to the sefirah of Chessed (from Adam Harishon until Noach). Those people lived a very long time.  Again, those 1000 years correspond to the sefirah of Chessed, and it means to give a lot.

The second millennium, which was the time of Noach and of the flood, is Gevurah.

The third millennium is the time of Yetzias Mitzrayim and Matan Torah, which is Tiferet.
Specifically in the year 2500, we left Mitzrayim and received the Torah on Mount Sinai, an event that will never be repeated, even after the messianic redemption.  We will always be living off of this revelation of Matan Torah.

The 4th millennium and the 5th millennium, corresponding to Netzach and Hod, were times of prophecy.  The Zohar teaches that prophecy comes from Netzach and Hod.  This was a time of prophets, from Joshua, through all of the Shoftim, until the kings of Israel, until the very last prophets that came after Ezra, at the beginning of the second temple, and continued even slightly into some of the later sages of the Tanayim (even though they were around a few hundred years after prophecy was officially said to have ceased in Israel).  When we say prophecy ceased, we mean prophecy and not Ruach HaKodesh.  The difference being that prophecy means that you were told to reveal something, where as Ruach HaKodesh, you get a Divine revelation which continued as well, of course.

The year 5769, the year that we are about to end, is in the 6th millennium.  The sefirah that corresponds to the 6th millennium is Yesod, and the letter that corresponds to it is Vav.  We know that the 6th millennium is correcting the sefirah of Yesod.

Fun with Numbers

The 6th millennium started around the time of the Rambam, and will be the millennium that Moshiach will be revealed in.  As long as we are talking about the 6th millennium, let’s do some quick math on the years that we did before.  Each year, just like each 1000 years, is correcting one general sefirah.  For this Millennium, it’s the sefirah of Yesod.  It also corresponds to the sexual organ. That’s why it’s said that matters of redemption are connected to, for the last 2000 years really, to matters related to communication, which is the aspect of Yesod.  That’s where the main Tikkun was.  Also, Ahavas Yisrael, which is a critical part of communication, as well as sexual morality.  Within the 6th millennium, we are in the 8th century, (counting the sefrot from kesser to malchus), the 8th sefirah is Hod (from the top).  Within the 8th century, we are in the 7th decade, which rectifies netzach. Within the 7th decade, we are in the 10th year, which is malchut.  So we are rectifying this year, of 5769, Shnas Hakel..Malchut of Netzach of Hod of Yesod. ((SEE DIAGRAM BELOW))

Lag B’Omer and Lechatchila Ariber

This year, 5770, begins a whole new decade, which means a whole new level of sefiros, specifically Keter.  We will be in Keter of Hod of Hod of Yesod.  Interestingly, Hod Sheh B’Hod is appearing for the first time to do a rectification of it in the 6th millennium.  The special thing about Hod Sheh B’Hod is that it’s Lag B’Omer.

What is so special about Hod Sheh B’Hod?  A simple answer is that we’ve never hit Hod sheh B’Hod.  The idea behind Sefirat HaOmer, the 49 days, is that we metaken (correct) seven sefirot within seven sefirot.  When is Hod Sheh B’Hod?  It’s Lag BaOmer.  The Rebbe points out that Hod Sheh B’Hod, from below to above if you count backwards,  is the 33rd day of the Omer, if you’re counting from Chessed Sheh B’ Chessed to Malchus Sheh B’Malchus.

What if you’re counting the other direction, from Malchus Sheh B’Malchus to Chessed Sheh B’Chessed? In Kabbalah, it’s called Ohr Chover.  There are two ways to look at things: from the above to below and from below to above.  Each aspect has a corresponding opposite.  Hod Sheh B’Hod’s opposite is Tiferet Sheh B’Tiferet, and Tiferet Sheh B’Tiferet is Lechatchila Ariber.

Our Avoda

What does that mean in Avodah for us?  All of these kabbalistic things are here to help us and to guide us on how to bring about our own personal geulah, and that is done through avodah (working on our divine service and relationship with Hashem).  Hod Sheh B’Hod corresponds to Bitul Sheh B’Bitul(nullification within nullification).  This is the epitome of self nullification, which comes only from studying the secrets of the Torah.  This is why Hod Sheh B’Hod is connected with Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and Lag B’omer and all of these things.

This level of bitul of Hod Sheh B’Hod brings you to Tiferet Sheh B’Tiferet, which is the inner aspect (Penimius) of Hod Sheh B’Hod, which is connected to lechatchila ariber.  We know that Tiferet Sheh B’Tiferet corresponds to the birthday of the Rebbe Maharash, who is known to have said ,” If you can’t go from below, and you can’t go from the sides, you should go from the top!”.

So what does this all mean?  Tiferet Sheh B’Tiferet is a gilui<revelation> of the Shem Havayeh< the YHVH name>, a revelation that is above past, present and future and is above the limitations of this world.  When a Jew is in a state of total nullification of his ego, which is Hod Sheh B’Hod., he connects to Tiferet Sheh B’ Tiferet, which is lechatchia ariber, and that there are no more limitations and constrictions stopping him at all. These limitations have another word in Torah…mitzrayim(Egypt).  If a Jew is holding by lechatchila ariber, and holding at Hod Sheh B’Hod, and working through the avoda of Tifert Sheh B’Tiferet, that is my definition of coming out of mitzrayim.   He is not bound by any limitation.

The Rebbe points out in a Sicha of Yud Gimel Tishri of tav shin mem ches, which is the yartzeit of the Rebbe Maharash, that when a Jew is holding by lechatchila ariber, where he doesn’t have any cheshbonos (calculations), he is not impressed by any limitations in this world.  The only thing that limits a person is his ego, yetzer hara and laziness.  It also depends on how that ego manifests itself in the person. In one person, it may be an overpowering personality, while in another person, his ego is quiet and letting the world trample all over him and not participate in society.  These are two totally opposite behaviors, but they are both manifestations of a person’s yeshus, a person’s sense of self.  The first person’s avodah is being quiet and letting people speak, whereas the second person’s avodah specifically is to talk, to speak up, to say a Dvar Torah, etc.

More fun with Numbers

Continuing in The Zohar, it says that in the 6th millennium, we will be redeemed with the letter Vav.

Here comes some very cryptic, mystical and kabbalistic language:  Six moments and a 1/2 of a moment.  In other words, 6 and ½ (whatever that means).  In the time of the 60 years of the 6th millennium, the G-d of the heavens will raise the redemption for the daughter of Yakov, and from that moment that G-d remembers her until the time the redemption is completed, it is 6 and 1/2 years.  The process of redemption lasts for 6 and 1/2 years, with many milestones along the way.  From that moment of remembrance until the redemption is complete is ANOTHER 6 years.  This ends in 72 and 1/2 years, which is another hint from the Zohar.  It takes 6 and 1/2 years to get to the remembrance, and then you have another 6 years until it’s complete.  When will it be complete?  72 and ½,  but in what century??

A question was asked that 6+6 1/2 is 12 and ½.  Where does 72 come from?  It seems to be the year that it’s all over. It’s a hint:

The Zohar continues: In 66, King Moshiach will be revealed in the land of the Galil, and a single star from the east will swallow 7 stars from the north.  A fire will be hanging in the sky for 60 days, and there will be wars fought in the world, in the northern part.  Then, two kings will fall in the battles, and all the people in the world will gather on the daughter of Yakov to push her out of the world.  And on that time it’s written that it will be a troubling time for Yakov and from it he will be redeemed.  In the year 73, all the kings in the world will gather into the great city of Rome.

My interpretation of this is that Rome is the main nation of Edom, which is the United States today and not Italy.  The great city of Rome, in many respects, corresponds to New York City, which is where 770 is.

Continuing in The Zohar: Hashem will throw at them fire and hail and remove them from the world.  From that moment, King Moshiach will be awakened throughout the whole world.
So, what do we have here? Sometime in the 6th millennium, in the year 60, something begins, to last 6 and 1/2 years, which takes us to 66 and 1/2. Then there is a second process, which takes us from 66 and 1/2 to 72 and ½.  In 72 and 1/2, Moshiach is revealed. In 73, you have all the nations of the world gathering in Rome, which is the United States, and the Great city of Rome, which is New York City.

By the way: regarding the Battles in the north, I would say this is Afghanistan and some of the neighboring countries where the war on terrorism is being fought.  From there, two kings will fall: the king of Edom and the King of Yishmael.  There is a Midrash that says that the last days of Galus Edom are going to be an aspect of Galus Yishmael, the Yishamelite exile.  That’s why the Gemora says that the Arabs will rule the land of Israel for 9 months.  All these things that we mentioned can either happen as great wars or very minor conflicts that we’re not even aware of.  It all depends on the merit of the Jews in the generation, and depending on how much we need to be moved to Teshuvah.

End of Days and the birth of Moshaiach

The Rebbe Rashab held by this Zohar that we just learned very much.  In the year Samech Vav, which was Tav Reish Samech Vav, which two main special things happened: 1) The Magnus Opus of classical Chassidus, the Hemshech of Samech Vav and 2) the foundation of the annual Seudas Moshiach, which we have on the last day of Pesach.

The Rebbe Rashab anticipated that the year Samech Vav would be a major ‘Ketz’, or a major end of days.  The reason is this Zohar, so the Rebbe thought it would be then.  We know now that the Rebbe stated that we are the last generation of Galus and the first generation of Geulah.  Certainly we’re not going to have to wait until the year 5866 or even 5966.  It started in 5766, which was 4 years ago, and we definitely see a tremendous redemption that has been started since then.  Since then, we were also Mekayem some other things in the Gemora, such as Moshiach won’t come until the last dollar runs out of the pocket.

Within the last year and a half, I don’t know anyone hasn’t been Mekayem this mitzvah B’Hiddur.  I don’t know anyone who has a dollar left in his pocket.  That’s changing now, with the coming of the year Tav shin Ayin, which is a major remembrance and turning point in this geulah, where we will see a bounty of riches.  This contradicts our basic faith that Moshiach can come at any day and walk in and end the Galus, but at the same time, when the Rebbe says ‘Now, Now Now!’ he really means it.  With that said, we are now studying the Zohar, and the Zohar is giving a process, and we see that process being fulfilled.

The last part, which corresponds to Tav Shin Ayin Gimel (2012), we see a Zoharic reference to the End of Days, as well as the Mayan calendar ending in 2012 as well as a chinese predicition of an ending in 2012 as well as a Notre Dames prediction of an ending in 2012.  We have a reference in the Zohar, but what is this process we are referring to?  It’s about us battling the Yetzer Hara.  The stuff about kings falling and a star from the east swallowing stars from the north are all writings talking about metaphysical phenomenon and dynamics.  This corresponds in our part to the war that we are fighting against darkness.  For example:  If you look in Balak.. the zohar chadash in Balak talks about the redemption being in the year 70.

Continuing in The Zohar:  At the end of 32 days from when that community is destroyed (killed), ((which some people say it refers to the death of the tzaddikim in Bambay, which was erev rosh chodesh Kislev and 32 days later was the beginning of the assault on Gaza)),  Hashem will wear Jealousy for the small shofar.  Moshiach Ben Yosef from the tribe of Ephraim is going to go out and wear one of the horns, and that small shofar will blow a Tekiah-Teruah-Tekiah three  times at the head of the mountain  At that time, a great noise will come out of the earth, which is the noise of the spreading of Chassidus.

There are three battles that the sons of Yishmael are going to fight against Moshiach.  These battles will take place in the 6th millennium.  During that time, the Arabs will be fighting the wars (against terrorism), the Edomites(The United States and Europe)will gather against the Holy Land ((which we see now, that the US and Europe are attacking Israel by wanting to give away it’s land to the Arabs and wanting to cause the opposite of Jewish dwelling in the Land of Israel)). This is going to happen for 12 months.  After 12 months, the whole world will be shaking.  Then, the Shechina will come towards the cave of Moshe and Moshiach will wait for 9 months((Like the months of having a baby in the stomach)).  During those 9 months, how much pain is he going to take upon himself?  Moshiach is going to have ‘birth pains’, and this is how it says that Hashem will answer you in the day of trouble ((As stated in the Kaptial 20 in Tehillim)). This kapital really has 10 pesukim.  Nine of them are part of the kapital and 70 letters.  In the 70th year in the 6th millennium, Moshiach will be born and will rule the entire world.

When will this be?  In 12 months? 9 months?  Rosh Hashanah of Tav Shin Ayim begins the Tikkun of Hod Sheh B’Hod, which is the gilui of the penimius of Torah.  Its final ego nullification brings about lechatchila ariber, which is Tifert Sheh B’Tiferet.  Lag B’Omer is a time when all the NEGATIVE things about the Omer are ending because of the Tikun of Hod Sheh B’Hod.  We will be beginning a decade of Hod Sheh B’Hod, which is a decade that includes Tav Shin Ayin, Tav Shin Ayin Beis and Tav Shin Ayin Gimel and the year 2012.  This surely will bring about the birth of Moshaich, after months of birth pains that we’ve seen and this will bring about the complete redemption now!

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is: Moshiach’s “coming” means that it becomes possible for all of us to attain a real experience that goes beyond our five senses and to “experience” G-dliness.  Kabbalah has made the wisdom and tools for this accessible to very special people practicing in secret societies for millenniums.  The novelty of Chassidus is that it makes these practices accessible to people like you and me, but even Chassidus has been around for 300 years already and – NU?!  So, the Lubavitcher Rebbe tells us that Moshiach is coming NOW; we can actually learn and apply the teachings.

Check this out – on the 8th of the Jewish month of Mar Cheshvan 5752 (1991) the Rebbe made a huge statement which was not just a “blessing” but a statement of fact.  The Rebbe said that anyone who busies himself with studying the deepest aspects of Chassidus (which deal with the deeper subjects in Kabbalah) will be assured a bountiful income (as well as health, children, etc.) with a minimum toil (specifically, the Rebbe said that Hashem will give him widespread livelihood with the toil of lifting a small finger).

So what do you say?  5770 will be a year of huge plenty – Tehe Shnas Ashirus (rashey teivot Tav Shin Aiyn)

    You mentioned about ‘Ohr Chover’. Can you please expound on that concept a little bit more? I’m not understanding it too well. Thanks.

    How does one bring himself to become the level of ‘bitul sheh b’bitul’? I know that studying chassidus helps, but what else can one do?

    Can you explain more about the birth pains that moshiach will have? You mentioned about them, but didn’t go into details really.

    rebbe was right in 1991 that moshiach start showing as a coming from east to west which will both change and be run as one world from moshiach,but when people are ready to see him,so he is there at least waiting

    So 5770 has come and gone – did Mashiach fail to show up again?

    Maybe not. Maybe we just need to open our eyes to look for him and find him?
